Field Instructors Receive Certificates At GSSW Appreciation Ceremony
Appreciation Brunch Honors Social Work Supervisors
Faculty and administrators from the Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) presented certificates to 20 dedicated social workers who completed the school’s Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI), during an awards ceremony and appreciation breakfast on April 29 at the school’s midtown campus.
Social workers from organizations including Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Yachad National Council for Disabilities, and several family and children’s services centers− took the 12-session seminar while supervising their first graduate interns from Touro’s GSSW. The sessions are taught by Prof. Roberta Shiffman, who presided over the certificates presentation at the breakfast, along with Dr. Steven Huberman, Dean of GSSW.
Guest speaker Dr. Kenneth Kwong, Associate Professor and Chair of Research Sequence, discussed emotional empathy versus emotional separation and how to cope with work-related stress like secondary trauma.
Dean Huberman praised the field instructors who participated in the seminar. “You have come to be builders and advocates for social justice. We need builders like you to create better race relations, hope, and a sense of purpose,” he said, adding, “It is an honor for you to be part of the Touro family."
